This New Butterfly Species Is Outstanding

WHAT IS IT? Euptchia attenboroughi joins the ever-growing list of species named after David Attenborough. However, this is the first butterfly to bear his name. Writing in the journal ZooKeys, the scientists say it’s “in gratitude for opening the eyes and hearts of millions to the natural world through his inspiring and edifying work”.

WHERE IS IT? Six specimens have been collected to date, from a small area of forest along the borders of Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela to the north of the Amazon river. The similar E. sophiae, described from the south of the river, is named after the niece of one of the scientists involved.
