Let’s admit it: we’ve all been wondering at some point in our lives where the heck do flies go in winter. We know that some animals such as bears hybernate and others manage to survive the cold weather as well, but what about those tiny insects that become annoying during summer?
Well, bad news for the fly haters, because many fly species actually stick with us all year long – we just don’t see them. So far, over 120,000 fly species have been discovered and studied, although it’s believed that their number is much larger than that. Some species are so small, it would be very difficult for us to spot them (or flies would have to be your no #1 enemy of all time).
However, sometimes it may happen to notice a pretty big fly just wondering around. A considerable amount of the larger fly species spend their winters in crannies and cracks and most of them are actually hybernating through the entire season! When the spring comes, they wake up because it’s time to lay eggs that will turn into brand new beautiful..fly babies. One of these species is actually Musca Domestica, or the house fly that just loves to sit with us inside all summer long.
Beware of the cluster fly, though! This carnivore fly species whose favorite hosts are earthworms loves to spend the winter in people’s cozy houses. However, they can only get comfy in unhygienic areas. Therefore, if you keep your house clean, you’ll be safe… until the spring comes, at least.
