Bichon Frise

Back in the 13th century, the Bichon Frise breed loved to hang out with the nobles. But when the fluffy white canine was forced out of the kingdom during the French Revolution, their kind adapted quickly and became circus performers. So, Bichons are not only cute, but they’re agile, trainable, and incredibly smart creatures.

Want a dog that almost acts like a cat, then the next breed is the one for you…..

    1. I love my Havanese she is everything you want in a dog. Does not shed, affectionate, brilliaant, playful and loving.

      1. I agree, I have a black and white male Havanese. He is the best dog ever! So loving, sweet, very intelligent, playful, loves people!
        They are the best!
I also had a Maltese for 16 years and he was also just the absolute best boy, same as my Havi! Two you should definitely add to this list!! 🐶💕

    2. I agree! My Havanese is an excellent little dog. Friendly, lovely, smart. She adores people and other animals, gives me so the attention that I want, is an excellent little watch dog and isn’t yappy.

  1. I had a beagle for many years, the sweetest dog ever. Beagles are known for their lovely personalities, always optimists.

    1. I’ve never had a beagle but know when one is near by their distinctive and adorable bark. I love it when one is over in the “small dog” area at the dog park. I have to go to the “big dog” area with my 80 lb Rottie who loves being a lap dog. I’ll hang out at the fence watching a beagle while my Rottie is off finding other dogs to wrestle with.

I have a beagle pug mix. Puggle loyal loving and she is always there to comfort the grandbabies elderly in a wheelchair. Stays close to comfort if you are not feeling well. Great mix breed. Kinda chunky but extended beagle snout adds years that are typically lost to breathing on normal pugs

    1. My inconsiderate neighbors had a beagle that habitually barked. I couldn’t open my windows on a nice day & I couldn’t sleep either! I hate beagles!

I absolutely agree! We’ve had 3 (all rescue doggies) over the years. The last one was a fawn color named “Frankie” They all lived long wonderful lives while enriching ours. Currently waiting on another pug to rescue and make our home the place to be.

  3. I have a Manchester Terrier which looks a great deal like a mini Pinscher. I got her from a clients family after the death of her young owner. The dog has great personality and is rather high strung. She is my best friend. I am very blessed. I have owner Chaihuahuas, Poms and even Pit Bulls. My Terrier is a great dog followed by the Chais.
Be blessed! Thanks for the article.

    1. I have also owned many other breeds of dogs. I have had Pit Bulls, Poms, Chais, and l currently have an 11 pound, nine year old Manchester Terrier. After over 50 years of canine ownership, l love my rescued Manchester. She is sweet, loyal, and usually quiet. She eats very little but she can be a bit high strung at times. She rarely get the least bit sick. She is very, very easy to care for and she requires little if any grooming. If anything were to happen to her, l would not hesitate to get another Manchester.

      1. I agree. As I was growing up my family only had Toy Manchesters. You can’t find them anymore, so I suppose the price has escalated.

Sorry to hear of loosing your dog to the med
Is there a suit going on ?
I swear I loss my Cavalier cause of Triflixis (sp)

    2. I’ve had 4 West Highland Terriers for almost 50 years. They have the cutest personalities! Affectionate, sweet, loyal, they love routines and love to cuddle! My current Westie is “Sir Winston” who was the runt of the litter so he’s very small at only 9 lbs but he’s the best! I wish I could clone him! He has quite the personality! All my friends and family say he’s the cutest with a big personality!

I have a rescued Jack Russell Terrier who is very active but also extremely lovable. So bright he even sings with me. Best thing that ever happened to me.

    1. Jimmy Hernandez

I have a Jack Russell rescue and he’s extremely smart and a good dog. We also have two Dachshunds male and a female who get along very well with him.

    2. We had two Jacks and one lived to 15+ and the other lived to 16+.
BOTH were great dogs and we miss them tremendously.
Very, very smart dogs and if I wasn’t so old, I would get another one.

    1. My friend just lost her teacup yorkie girl, she died a week ago and she’s looking for a new puppy. Do you have any ideas where to look for a new dog for her? She’s really grieving.

My 12 year old male Yorki passed away
Feb. 6th at 4:29 AM in my arms.
I am in my 70s and have had a full life but this hit me hard
Even 21 months in VN. was a cake walk to loosing my beloved companion.
I can’t think about replacing him and still grieve. daily
Perhaps suffering from PTSD Doesn’t help. but no matter I will love and miss him till my turn comes to cross over.

  5. Again where is the Yorkshire Terrier?!?! One of the best small dogs and you don’t even have them in here!!!!!

    1. I have a 7 month old Yorki-Poo. She’s 99% Yorki & I haven’t detected any Poo yet. Very active and I’m looking forward to her move into 3rd gear so she’ll slow down just a little bit.

    2. Indeed!!!! I adore my little baby girl, Lady Fiona Angel Face 👼 a Yorkshire Terrier❣️
I love her beyond love ❤️

  6. I can’t believe you included the mean tempered Chiuaua, but did not include one of the sweetest tempered breeds out there… the Papillon!!!

  7. Many dog breeds are the result of cross-breeding two (or more) breeds. Arguably, the most popular, smartest, and lovable is that of the Pug/Beagle mix, the “Puggle”. Yet they are rarely mentioned in any publication, etc. They are much, much better and loyal family members than most AKC breeds in existence. It is high time that they are recognized as the wonderful companion that they are.

  8. I have a Bichon Friese, the most lovable pet beside my previous Bichon, Pierre who went to heaven! These pets are like children who love me unconditionally! Jazzy is my ever present girl, who wants to be with me wherever I go, she cries/barks loadly if I leave her behind!

  9. The picture of the Australian Terrier is not correct. Although the coloring and feature are similar that picture looks like a Yorkie. Had an Australian and Cairn Terriers and they are awesome! Beagles too!

  10. I have Jack Russells. Loyal, high spirited, smart, highly energetic. The best Max and Princess. Can they jump, 5 foot vertical jump. They are awesome little dogs.😍❤️

  11. I am really hurt that you totally ignore my Shih Tzu. A very popular small dog that’s very lovable. A breed that originated in Tibet the China.

  12. No Dachshund? One of the most loyal and loving dogs on the planet. I’ve had 3 and just rescued my fourth one. Crazy omission.

  13. John Guntkowski

This is my second Bichon and you just can’t love them enough, so smart, loving and playful. Plus they can be a little demanding…

  14. Andrea Williams

Looking for an older female yorkie to adopt. Won’t be ready for one for probably 3-4months as I am renovating my house.

  15. Once you own a Westie you will be hooked. They can be stubborn but they are the most loyal, affectionate and smartest dogs I have ever been exposed to. I had several other breeds before I got my first Westie. I have had three but my girl of 14.5 passed away. I plan on getting another in the near future once I am over my grief.

  16. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are the most gorgeous little dog anyone could own. Although they face many health challenges and shed hair everywhere, the love and companionship you receive from these gentle little dogs makes them number one in my opinion. Wonderful with small children.

  17. Excellent article on small dog breeds!!! I love all dogs. Since I m a senior I need a small dog. Easier to hug and carry. Fit on my lap. Thank you for this wonderful article.

  18. Joanne warburton

These little dogs are sweet. My mum had one black&tan. Never liked strangers though, would hide under the chair and growl.

  19. Elsie J rodriguez

I have 2 small dogs , and they are my babies , i have a chihuahua and a Shih Tzu . i love my babies , Each have their own bed , but sometimes they sleep with me ..❤❤❤

  20. I don’t understand why, when talking about tiny dogs, you NEVER mention the Chinese Crested or the Toy Manchester. Both are wonderful, tiny house dogs. Another one is the Papillion. How about in a future issue you examine these cuties. I would love to see it. My Chinese Crested feels unloved!

  21. Greyhound is not small. Needs to run. You may want to reconsider what Dogs are appropriate for a one or two bedroom apartment, because THAT’S small.

  22. I have had three American Eskimos. SO very easy to train and very loving. I also have a Portuguese Podengo Pequeno. Sweet little beast but with the hound breed more difficult to train. Very much a velcro dog!

  23. We have five Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, one of each color. One has been trained as my Service Dog and accompanies me everywhere I go. They all love attention and will sit in your lap all day long, given a chance. Very Intelligent and love to please.

  24. West Hiland White. No TWO Westies have the exact same personality. Neatest dog with absolute best looks. A mans dog without the stomata of being “just a man’s dog”. Can be very independent, headstrong, but they can back down a MUCH larger dog when called upon.

  25. You missed one of the most adorable, independent, stubborn, lovable, dependent little dogs in the world. The Shi-tzu. They are bossy, love to play or cuddle as the occasion might call for do a minimal amount of shedding when their coats are kept short. They are easy to train, smart as a whip and up for a hike or a day on the couch.

  26. Papillons are the perfect breed. They’re beautiful smart-second only to Border Collies in intelligence. They don’t shed much and they get along well with other dogs and cats as well as kids. It’s a small breed both in size (3-10#) and as it’s not a heavily populated breed we’re able to regulate the genetics so we don’t see a lot of breed related health issues like luxating patella or epilepsy. Easily trained to be service dogs.

  27. Why aren’t miniature dachshunds listed?!? Baby Girl is 13# but they range from 10 to 14 # and they’re also low to the ground. I call my Baby Girl my low-slung sports model.

  28. My cockapoo is adorable, smart,
very playful. He’s my cuddle bug.
Charlie follows me everywhere and enjoys riding in the car with me. We go on many car trips across the country and into the mountains.
He loves the snow hopping and running through the drifts.

  29. I loved my Basenji. She was the sweetest dog I ever knew but also very stubborn. Extremely intelligent and loving.

  30. We have a Havanese, he is a great dog! Very interactive with us, affectionate, very smart and wants to please. And he is always after rodents, mice, chipmunks, and squirrels. We love him dearly. I too have noticed that this breed is never mentioned in your pieces.
