I believe that everyone’s dog is completely different and all of them have their own personality. I still remember when I was a little kid and I used to believe every single thing I saw in cartoons.
I used to think that all dogs could understand what I tell them and I also believed that my pup would always sleep next to me and cuddle me when I’m sad. Little did I know that the majority of the time, in order to do that, you have to train your dog.
Today’s article is for the little kids in us, who used to think that everything we see on TV or in our magical books is actually real. We all want our dogs to become our best friends, but they need time and patience to reach that. There are quite a few training techniques and pieces of advice that the experts have in order to succeed.
This is exactly why I did my best research on the top 6 easiest dog training tips and tricks.
1. Don’t rush and stay calm
It doesn’t matter if your dog understands everything you tell them or not, you have to maintain a positive attitude. Don’t get angry or frustrated with your pup if they don’t get it the first time!
If you stay calm and relaxed, you will encourage your pet’s capacity to learn and have fun while doing it. Your dog tends to adapt their behavior after your attitude, so it’s important to think twice before reacting.
If you yell at your pup, they won’t learn anything useful and they will start being scared of you. Keep in mind that pups are like children and you need a lot of patience!
2. Don’t forget about your pup’s temperament
All dogs have different personalities and temperaments, so they have different rates of processing and learning the new information they receive. Besides that, each breed comes with its own characteristics, so you will have to adjust your training technique based on your pet’s temperament.
3. Give them immediate rewards
Dogs don’t think like humans, so they don’t understand long-term causes and effects. They’re fast learners, so you have to give them a reward within a few seconds after they did what you wanted.
By doing so, you will help them reinforce the behavior and associate the treat with the action you wanted them to perform. Another thing you have to keep in mind is to give them the reward fast enough, so they don’t get confused.
For instance, imagine that you teach them the “sit” command and they sit just for a second. By the time you give them the reward, they’re already standing back up. In a case like this, you’re actually rewarding the standing behavior, not the one you wanted.
4. Try the clicker training
There are many people who say that clicker training is a really effective method to teach your dog different commands and behaviors. That is because you can click a lot faster than you can pet your dog on the head or give them a reward.
If you click and reward them every time your pup does something you wanted them to do, they will start to associate good behavior with clicking and receiving a treat.
You can apply this technique to any type of command you want to teach your dog. After a while of applying this method, your dog will remember that clicking comes after they did something good and what happens next is receiving something good.
…Long story short, this is what you have to remember: teach them a command, click if they performed it, give them a treat, and praise them at the end!
5. Train your pup on an empty stomach
This doesn’t mean you have to starve your dog before training them, but make sure to not feed them a big meal a few hours before the training session. That is because if they have a full stomach, they won’t be as interested in your treat.
The best part is that the more your dog wants the reward, the more focused they will be to receive it. As a result, they will learn a lot faster!
6. Move the training session to a park
If you want to teach your dog a command, such as “sit” or “come”, it is important to begin in a safe place, where they can focus all of their attention on you.
After a while, when they seem to make progress, you can move the training session to a park, where they might get distracted. Even though it might sound confusing at first, your pup must learn to respond to your commend even when they’re distracted by smells, sounds, sights, or other dogs.
