Small and cute doesn’t mean nice and friendly, and little dogs really know how to prove that to us. They might be all bubbly, funny, cuddly, and goofy, but their whole attitude changes when they meet a bigger dog. You might expect them to get scared and hide behind you, but they actually surprise you, and they start barking at the other pooches.
That might be because you didn’t give them the opportunity to socialize and get used to different kinds of situations, or it might be simply because they don’t acknowledge their size. We’ve analyzed a few pups, and we’ve put together a list of 6 cute dogs that think they’re tough. Click on the next page to discover them:
1. Yorkshire Terrier
They might be small and adorable, but their personality is as big as a German Shepherd. These pups come in the classic variant and also in the toy version, which make them the perfect pooches for apartments or small homes in general.
However, if you’re thinking of becoming a Yorkie owner, you’d better announce to your neighbors that you have a new roommate, because the majority of these doggies are not quiet.
I have a friend who has a Yorkshire Terrier whose name’s Pepsi because he’s too agitated. When he sees other dogs, he starts barking really, really loud, especially if the pooches he sees are way bigger than him.
His attitude changes when he sees people he doesn’t know. When he’s in the subway, for instance, he starts shivering and wants to hide behind his owner, but he would love to take down other pups.
2. Pomeranian
Pomeranians are playful puffballs you would love to cuddle and hug all day! They come in several sizes and colors, and they look like small and cute teddy bears. You should know that they are very talkative, so it’s going to be a real challenge to make them stay quiet!
And if you think that they are understanding and easy-going, you should reconsider your thoughts! As much as they might make you laugh with their goofy personality, they will surely drive you crazy at times with their stubbornness!
3. Miniature Schnauzer
This cute pup is the smallest of three Schnauzer sizes, and they love to spend time with their favorite humans. They get along with children, which makes them the perfect pups for families! They are very adaptable and playful, and they like to run around in nature but don’t have a problem staying indoors.
Miniature Schnauzers are very smart, so it’s easier for their owners to teach them all sorts of tricks. However, as cuddly and affectionate as they are with their humans, there might be times when their feisty personalities shine through. But don’t worry, they are not aggressive. They just like to think they look tough and scary!
4. Pekingnese
These pups are associated with nobility and royalty, and they really enjoy being pampered and cuddled all day long. If you’re looking for a dog who’s loud and knows how to tell you what they want, this one’s for you!
They are very attached to their owners, and they might get moody if they feel like their needs aren’t fully met. As much as they love to play with their families, they tend to get very noisy and feisty when they meet other pups or strangers.
The best thing you can do to make your Pekingnese more friendly is to take them often to the dog park, where they have the chance to meet with other pooches and socialize.
5. Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are tiny, cute, fluffy, and affectionate with their owners. But they tend to be very feisty when they notice something they don’t like! They’re very agile, smart, and alert. And they don’t care at all about their size. All they want to do is protect themselves and their families from any danger that might take place. And that’s why they are considered the smallest watchdogs in the world.
Chihuahuas are very delicate and easy to please if you are nice to them and give them treats. But they don’t get along with small children who don’t know how to be gentle yet. So if you’re planning on bonding a small dog like this with a toddler, make sure you teach kids how to be gentle, soft, and mellow.
Another thing you should keep in mind about Chihuahuas is that you should give them plenty of opportunities to socialize. They get angry very easily and enter a fighting mood if they meet strangers or pups they don’t like.
6. Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is an affectionate and cute white dog whose bubbly personality will win the hearts of its owners. They are known for being the joyful clowns of the canine world, and they do a really good job at keeping their owners entertained for a long time.
Unlike many other small dog breeds, the Bichon Frise is really robust and strong for its tiny size, and they don’t require a lot of space to play and be happy. They like to be active both indoors and outdoors, and they also enjoy learning tricks, proving to their favorite humans how smart they are.
They have a strong personality, and there might be times when they get upset because you didn’t give them something. They will remember, and they might do something to get “revenge”. If you want to be the proud owner of a cute and feisty pup like this, make sure to take them out to socialize and teach them the ground rules.
Other than that, you’ll have a lot of fun with a pooch like this, and they will do everything they can to protect you while also making you laugh!
