Dogs have been protecting humans ever since Ancient times. We have a constant need for security, companionship, and loyalty that hasn’t changed a lot since then, which makes dogs a very popular choice when it comes to protection and property.

Watchdogs will always bark to let their owners know that there’s an intruder, but they will rarely attack. Guard dogs are very protective of their families, displaying fearlessness. Some of them have an intimidating size and appearance, and they’re also incredibly smart and loyal. Want to know which dogs fit this description? Here are some of the greatest examples of protective pooches:

  • Airedale terrier – Airedale is also known as “the king of terriers”, as they’re extremely friendly but also exuberant. Sometimes they can seem as though they don’t have an “off” switch, but they are amazing with kids, they learn very quickly, and they’re also hypoallergenic, which makes them one of the best guard dogs ever. During World War I, they earned a reputation for bravery and focus. If they sense you’re in threat, they will bark nonstop and even use their powerful jaws if necessary.
  • Tibetan mastiff – This dog is bred in the Himalayas, and is one of the best guard dogs ever. He’s aloof, with a sharp mind, watchful, and a bit primitive. If you keep a Tibetan mastiff in your home, he might not let anyone else visit you.
  • Caucasian shepherd – Also known as the Russian bear dog, Caucasian Ovcharka, this sweet-looking dog looks like a bear, and is one of the most popular Russian dog breeds. They can be extremely powerful and ferocious, especially when it comes to strangers. They were initially bred to kill wolves and hunt bears, so you can only imagine how tough they are.
  • Akita – This Japanese mountain dog represents a symbol of good health and long life back in his native country, Japan. Akitas are extremely protective by nature, as they were initially bred to guard the Japanese emperor and his family. The first American to own an Akita was Hellen Keller, as she received the dog as a gift back in 1937.
  • American Staffordshire terrier – Also known as an AmStaff, the American Staffordshire terrier is one of the many types of pit bulldogs. This dog is known to be affectionate, playful, and extremely energetic. They love to be mentally stimulated and have strong personalities. They aren’t the best swimmers, and they need to exercise a lot.
  • Giant schnauzer – This bearded behemoth is made to protect its family and home, and its size and strength come in his help. The giant schnauzer loves to get constant attention and has an extreme need for both mental and physical stimulation.

  • Appenzeller sennenhund – Coming from Switzerland, these medium-sized doggies are extremely cheerful, smart, and energetic. Even if they’re characterized by a friendly attitude, they are naturally wary of strangers. They’re naturally fearless, and can’t be stopped from protecting their families. Appenzeller feel better when they’re in a colder climate and they need a lot of space, so they’re not made for apartment living.
  • Beauceron – These dogs look a lot like Doberman pinschers, and they’re the largest French sheepdogs out there. They have a calm demeanor and they’re very confident, and fearless. However, they will need firm training, in order to prevent them from dominating their families.
  • Belgian Malinois – The Belgian Malinois has been used for a long time for police work, and they received a moment of fame when one dog named Cairo helped the Navy SEAL Team 6 take down Osama bin Laden in 2011. This dog is very similar to the German shepherd, being intelligent, loyal, and a great choice for a guard dog.
  • Black Russian terrier – These massive dogs were bred to be “super dogs” for the Russian army back in the 1930s. As history says, a team of scientists gathered genes from 17 other breeds to develop this friendly-looking dog.
  • Chesapeake Bay retriever – This is allegedly the most protective of the sporting dogs. Even if it’s sensitive and devoted, a Chessie can be extremely stubborn and not nearly as friendly with strangers as other retrievers.
