Dogs are man’s best friend. They do everything with us—walk around town, ride in the car, play in the yard. Some of them even sleep with us. It’s natural, then, given how much time we spend with our four-legged companions, to assume they can eat with us, too. However, human food can be dangerous for dogs, even types of food that are completely safe for us.
Part of the reason we can eat foods that they can’t is that dogs are so much smaller than us. They also weigh far less, which means their bodies can’t absorb things as quickly. “Foods that are perfectly suitable for human consumption, as well as other animals, may be toxic and even poisonous to your dog, posing a serious threat to their health and well-being,” Michelle Schenker writes for “Canine Journal.”
“Why? Because all animals have very different rates of metabolism.” Another problem is that dogs have voracious appetites and don’t always know when to stop. Although some foods are not toxic in small doses, larger quantities can be fatal.
To give you an idea of what human foods can be dangerous, Stacker has put together a slideshow of 15 common foods to avoid. Take a look to see if there are any that surprise you.

Very informative, thank you.
thanks for all the poison foods.
nice to learn of foods not to give my fur friends.
FYI
where can i find the list of vitamins and other supplements or additives needed to make my dog food at home ?
Just google recipes for homemade dog food. And also put a powder vitamin supplement in it. Also you can google that. I make my dogs food with chicken breast, carrots, brown rice and green beans. And I use the same ingredients and do a beef using ground chuck beef. Much healthier then can foods. After you make a big batch freeze it in little baggies. Good luck
My dogs have never had a problem with milk chocolate or white chocolate. I never give them a more than a nibble of milk chocolate, though. But this was very informative, thank you!
Chocolate is definitely dangerous for your dog. You can not see the damage but chocolate has the chemical theobromine which affects the heart and nervous system and can shorten your dog’s life. We eat saturated fat in some of our foods and that will have a prolonged effect on our lives, even though we may not feel the build-up until later. However, theobromine is a poison for dogs and can kill them. Heed the warnings if you love your dog. The healthiest food for your dog is found in a can. Read the labels and stay away from ingredients that contain by-products.
Very smart dog information is always good to know, so passing this on to all I know is a must.
Extremely informative. I knew some of the lists, however, there were items that opened my eyes. Thank you
Very informative. Thank you
Thank you, I learned a lot more about what’s not going to my dogs.
Some times you need a reminder, of how toxic people’s food can be for our pets.
Added a lot to my learning
Thanks so much for this information.
Angie chocolate is bad for dogs. What makes you think you are smarter than people who have already discovered this. You can’t see the problem immediately but it affects the heart and the nervous system. It contains a poison called theobromine. Don’t think like Trump, you don’t know it all. Look it up.
Tom, does your dog also have TDS?
So sorry you had to make the political–ruined it!
I can tell you that you ruined your comment by making it political, you look to be the fool here.
What’s in (or missing) in cat food that adversely affects dogs?
very helpful information.
very informative! I’m surprised about the spinach.
Peach, plum, cherry and apricot pits are also toxic to your dogs. They have what is called Cyanogenic Glycosides (amygdalin) which is a form of cyanide. This toxin slows down the enzymes in your dog’s body that are essential to transport oxygen in the blood. I have 2 Great Pyrenees puppies, they are the most amazing dogs ever. I want to keep them safe and healthy. I have peach trees in their area that I’m going to have to cut down. I can plant more trees to another area on the farm, but I cannot replace my pups.
I only feed my dog dog food and dog biscuits as treats. I do not feed him from the table because this encourages begging. He’s a mature dog and at a healthy weight. He’s a great dog and very loyal, so I want him to lead a long, healthy life
wow learned something there should be a list of these and the top good things, with demencha and have an aid dog that would help me and many other people
