5. Rat Terrier
Life span: 15-18 years
Their name has a funny story. This breed was actually bred for the purpose to kill rats and other small rodents. It is also believed that President Roosevelt was very fond of Rat Terriers.
They are so small and adorable, we aren’t surprised he was.
6. Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Life span: 10-13 years
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a large hunting dog, which, some say, is capable of hunting up to 200 ducks a day. There’s even a famous story regarding their origins and history.
Allegedly, in the 1800s a British ship was adrift near the coast of Maryland and two Newfoundlands were rescued. The two, which were named Sailor and Canton, had good abilities as retrievers.
7. Plott Hound
Life span: 12-14 yearsÂ
This intimidating, yet loving dog, was bred to hunt and protect his turf and owners. This breed is the official state dog for North Carolina.
They arrived on these lands back in the 1750s.
8. American Eskimo Dog
Life span: 13-15 years
They are adorable, white fluffs that are a very good option for any owner. They are small, loving, and enjoy playing with their families.
They were brought to the U.S. by German immigrants, and they are a mix between a German Spitz and an Italian Spitz.
9. Chinook
Life span: 13-15 years
This breed is quite rare. They are a mix of an unknown breed with a husky. Their coats are very soft, making them the perfect cuddlers.
Their name comes from a funny story. In 1927, a captain named Chinook went on an expedition to Antarctica and he had several pups accompanying him on the trip. One of the pups turned out to be this kind.
10. Toy Fox Terrier
Life span: 13-14 years
These small pups were known as farm dogs, that hunt small rodents. They are a combination of a Chihuahua, Manchester Terrier, and a Smooth Fox Terrier.
The Toy Fox Terrier is highly intelligent and their huge ears make us love them even more.
