The police officers in San Antonio, Texas, received a phone call about a poor animal that needed help in the middle of a road. Its life was in danger and they were also shocked when they saw the creature. Read on to find out the story of this poor animal!
This animal was just a poor dog which was neglected and abandoned on streets.
Of course, no one knew the dog’s gender because of its matted hair that seriously tortured it. It couldn’t open its mouth to eat and its condition was very serious.
Police officers took the dog in San Antonio Animal Care Services. A medical team took the case and their main aim was saving the dog’s life.
“He had to be sedated for the mats to be safely removed,” said Cynthia Martinez, chief operations officer for San Antonio Animal Care Services. “The clinic staff completed the mat removal and reported that they removed 6 pounds of mats.”
After all this process of cleaning and care, the doctors found that it was a male cocker spaniel. A local rescue team heard about this case on social media and they decided to save the dog. “We had to have this dog,” said Rebecca Payne, of Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin and San Antonio. “He is the worst dog I’ve ever seen like that. We wanted to give him a happy life.”
Payne drove right over to the shelter to pick him up. “I was shocked. He was so tiny,” she said. “He was so underweight you could see almost every bone in his body. I think the mats were so bad he couldn’t open his mouth to eat.”
The rescuers named it Hamish and continued to take care of it with different treatments. It needed a dental surgery too. “Every dog has about 42 teeth,” Payne said. “Hamish had to have so many removed he has only 11 out of 42 left.”
Nevertheless, Hamish is now in a good condition, it can eat better again and begins to gain some weight. It has new friends and started to love again.
Hamish is also having a blast discovering new things in his foster mom’s house. “He gets a bad rap for his looks,” Payne said.
“He looks like a grumpy old man, but he’s the most loving, amazing guy.”
