When you’re taking in a dog, there are several aspects that you need to think through regarding their food, their personal care, and among others, how much exercise they require.

Some breeds need daily exercise, so, they automatically require daily walks or a BIG backyard where they can chase their favorite fetch toy.

If you’re not ready for that, or if the active life isn’t your thing, then we have a list of breeds that don’t require too much physical effort.

Here are some low-energy dogs that you can share your lifestyle with:

1. Pug

Life span:  12-15 years

Grooming: Weekly

Pugs are so adorable, we can’t even put it into words…but we’ll try! A lot of people are fond of their silly appearance, but that’s not the only reason they choose this fluffy companion.

Pugs don’t require a lot of exercise, and that is because of the breathing condition they are prone to. That being said, it doesn’t take too much exercise before they give up.

Bear in mind that extreme heat can be too much for them, so don’t keep them outside during the summer too long.

2. Bullmastiff

Life span:  8-10 years

Grooming: Regular

You wouldn’t expect such a large and big dog to be the kind that needs the least exercise, right? Well, no matter their size, the Bullmastiffs are incredibly lazy dogs.

Usually, their favorite activity is sleeping in for hours and hours. If you happen to live in an apartment, there’s no need to worry about them creating havoc, they are not that active.

However, you should take them out for a short daily walk.

3. Tibetan Spaniel

Life span:  12-15 years

Grooming: Regular

Their favorite thing to do? They enjoy a good nap on your lap while receiving cuddles and love from their owner. Even though they aren’t the physical type, they are highly curious.

So, it will come as no surprise when they sniff everything in sight while out on a walk.

4. Basset Hound

Life span:  10-12 years

Grooming: Weekly

A long time ago, they were known as amazing hunters, since they were bred for activities as such. Nowadays, things are a bit different. They are still curious about their surroundings and will tend to explore new grounds while the two of you are out on a walk.

But, those instincts will soon fade away, as their lazy side comes to light. They require a short daily walk, but they won’t feel the need for more than that.

5. English Bulldog

Life span:  8-10 years

Grooming: Weekly

Whenever we’ve seen an English bulldog they were lying on a sofa, sleeping and having the best time of their lives. Sun doesn’t do well for them since they can overheat easily.

So, it’s best to keep them inside during extreme weather. Besides the fact that they are not too active, they also don’t shed a lot and don’t require regular grooming.

6. Chow Chow

Life span:  9-15 years

Grooming: Regular

These fluffy pooches are incredible. They are loyal, lovely, and extremely adorable. But, sometimes they resemble a cat, because of their independent nature and laziness.

Chow Chows can gain more than 70 pounds, so they will be the perfect cuddlers.

7. Boston Terrier

Life span: 13-15 years

Grooming: Regular

Due to their small size, calm and quiet character, they are great dogs for indoors, especially, apartments. They don’t exceed 25 pounds.

They are not very active dogs, to say the least, so one walk a day should be more than enough.

8. Shih Tzu

Life span: 10-15 years

Grooming: Regular

This breed is perfect for an apartment life. Shih Tzu dogs aren’t fond of going outside too much. The amount of exercise they are getting from walking around the house is enough for them.

They shed a lot, though, and they require daily grooming.
