When you have a pet, you have to expect and prepare yourself for the challenges that lie ahead. Their chewing phase, their potty-training phase, and so many other things.

One common thing among pets, that concerns a lot of owners is when they stop eating. Sometimes, they won’t have a high appetite. But you don’t have to worry, there are a lot of explanations for that.

Let’s see what you can do if your pet stops eating and what is causing it.

Why isn’t my pet eating?

There can be a lot of causes as to why your dog is not eating such as the following:

1. They may be ill

One of the most common reasons why your fluffy companions aren’t eating anymore is the fact that they may be sick. Just like in humans, their low appetite is caused by an illness.

No matter the case, you should speak to a vet immediately and go for a check-up.

2. Their medication

If your pet has been on some new medication lately, it may experience a low appetite. Some of them will make your beloved animal experience upsetting stomachaches.

3. Emotional distress

Dogs can go through this as well. They can feel depressed, anxious, and so on. Those problems can even affect their eating habits.

4. You’re absent a lot

Having an absent owner can make them feel sad. If they don’t touch their food or drink while you’re away, but they rush into the bowl the minute you’re home, then you’ve got your answer.

5. They just don’t like it

Another possible cause for their shift in eating habits could be the fact that they simply don’t like what you’re feeding them.

Let’s find out what can we do if they show this behavior and how we can improve the situation:

2. Warmup their food

Maybe you’ll have more success if you microwave their food. But make sure you don’t leave it in there for too long. You don’t want it to be too hot for your pet.

3. Add something special

You can make your pet eat their food by adding some chicken broth, beef broth, clam juice or tuna water. It may sound a bit too much for us, but for them it’s a delicacy. They will devour their bowl after this.

4. Or add some water

Adding some warm water over their food to make it softer will do the trick for your pet.

5. Switch it with dry/wet food

If they normally eat dry food try feeding them some wet food. Or if it’s the other way around feed them some dry food.

6. Feed them with your hand

Sometimes they just want some attention from us. Feeding them directly from your hand will also feed their huge diva egos.
