A puppy that was going to be abandoned because he was born with a crooked jaw has found a new home with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The 15-week-old Jack Russell puppy, Dilyn, was carried into No. 10 Downing Street in London on Monday morning.
Johnson and his girlfriend, Carrie Symonds, adopted Dilyn from the shelter Friends of Animals Wales, run by Eileen Jones.
“Thanks to the wonderful Eileen from @FOAWales who rescued Dilyn after she got a tip-off that he was to be dumped by a puppy dealer because he was born with a crooked jaw,” Symonds tweeted Monday. “Eileen fixed his little jaw & saved his life. She is a hero.”
Dilyn will be joining the No. 10 cat, Larry, who has taken up permanent residence at the address. Unlike Larry, Dilyn belongs to Johnson and Symonds.
The high-profile adoption will raise awareness for new anti-puppy farming legislation in the U.K., “Lucy’s Law,” which aims to stop puppy sellers breeding dogs in poor conditions before selling them to pet shops.
Under the new rules, which go into effect next April, people who wish to buy a puppy or kitten will need to deal directly with a breeder or shelter, rather than a third-party seller.
PupAid founder Marc Abraham said, “I’m absolutely delighted that the Prime Minister and Carrie have chosen to rescue a puppy, which will hugely help to highlight Lucy’s Law.”
Symonds thanked him on Twitter, writing, “Thanks to the amazing @marcthevet who introduced us to Eileen & has campaigned so tirelessly for #LucysLaw which will help put an end to all cruel third party puppy dealers.”
