9 Animals That Can Predict the Weather

It is said that animals have the power to predict the weather and it all started with Punxsutawney Phil – the most popular groundhog in the United States of America. Well, it seems that Phil can foresee the weather and if it sees its shadow but returns to its hole, it means that winter will go on.

But if the famous groundhog doesn’t see its shadow, it means that spring is coming. Thanks to Phil, Since 1887 the United States of America and Canada celebrate Groundhog Day every year on the 2nd February.

Nevertheless, there is speculation that groundhogs are not the only ones who can predict the weather, because there are a lot of animals endowed with this gift and many farmers or meteorologists confirm this hypothesis. So, it’s up to you if you think this is the truth or not!

It is said that cows can predict the weather

According to farmers, when cows become agitated, impatient and start to kill flies with their tails, it means that they feel the rain or storms approaching. Additionally, they predict the early rains even when they lie down in a field or when the bulls enter first in the pasture. Their tail is also important in this process because an east-oriented tail means bad weather and a west-oriented tail means the day is going to be serene.

Frogs and toads are also good at predicting the weather

These amphibians are good at predicting different natural phenomena. For instance, when frogs are croaking louder and the volume gradually increases and it is different than usual it means that the weather will be bad and stormy. According to some animal specialists, when frogs croak longer on some days more than on others it means that there will likely be many rainy days.

However, things are different for toads, because they can foresee earthquakes. To be more specific, when an earthquake is on its way, they feel the first vibrations of the earth through the pond and they run away.

Can woolly bear caterpillars predict the weather?

The answer is yes! Woolly bear caterpillar is an interesting insect with an impressive appearance that will probably morph into various species of a tiger moth. Well, according to farmers, these creatures can actually predict the weather, namely, they can foresee how severe and challenging the winter will be.

Thus, the browner they are, the milder and lighter the winter will be. Some animal experts say that woolly bear caterpillars can’t predict the weather and their features are determined by the species, their age or by what they have eaten.

Are crickets the predictors of spring?

Did you know that you can find out the temperature outside depending on the number of chirps made by the crickets? How? Well, all you have to do is to count the chirps for 15 seconds, then add 40 and the result will show the temperature, measured in Fahrenheit.

Additionally, to find out the temperature measured in Celsius, you have to count the chirps for 8 seconds and then add 5. Note: the crickets make slower noises when it is cold outside. So, the best solution is to check the weather online if you want to go for a walk.

Crows can actually predict the weather

There is speculation that birds – especially crows – can predict the weather better than a meteorologist. To be more specific, it is said that if a crow flies alone, it means that the weather will be bad, but if they fly in pairs the day will be serene.

But according to some scientists, birds do not fly when a storm is in its way. They will stay on a power line before the rain hits and they will feed in the morning so that there is no need to fly when it is bad weather. So, birds have to migrate because of these climate and atmospheric changes as well.

It is said that fish can predict the weather as well

According to numerous animal specialists, animals can feel the changes in barometric pressure, especially when it comes to those that live under the water. Additionally, birds can also feel climate pressure.

According to Accuweather, “when rain is ‘nigh’ or impending, low-pressure systems generally occur…[and] cause plant particles that were trapped at the bottom of a lake to rise. When this occurs, microscopic organisms are dispersed in the water and provides food for small fish. The small fish, in turn, become food for larger fish.”

When sheep gather in a huddle, tomorrow will have a puddle

The legend says that a storm is on its way if you see the sheep gathering in the herd, protecting each other. Moreover, people say that heavy urination means that there is going to be a rainy day and yellow urine can be interpreted as good weather. So, as the saying goes “when sheep gather in a huddle, tomorrow will have a puddle,” if you see sheep trying to warm up in the group, then the weather will be cold and bad.

Bees and butterflies can feel the climate changes

Butterflies are wonderful creatures that amaze us with their kindness. There are thousands of interesting things and facts about butterflies. These delicate insects delight us with their beauty, but especially with their amazing abilities, and among them is the gift of predicting the weather.

When bees and butterflies disappear from flowers, it is a sign that the weather is changing. Besides birds and fish, bees and butterflies are insects that can predict the weather. So, when you wake up in the morning and you do not see the beautiful and colorful bees and butterflies in your garden, you should know that they are looking for shelter before the storm appears. They can feel the climate changes and the barometric pressure can really affect them.

Ladybugs are good at predicting the weather too

A ladybug is one of the most familiar and beloved insects. It lives all over the world, except the places where it is too cold.

The ladybugs also gather together, but in this case, it means good weather. But, on the other hand, if you see that these insects are agitated and they are desperately looking for a place to shelter, it means that the rain is coming.
