The vaquita are in the same order of animals as porpoises, dolphins, and whales. They are considered to be the rarest marine animal with only 60 of them known to exist in the wild. Their population has decreased by 40% in just the last 5 years. The vaquita’s numbers have believed to have plummeted due to illegal fishing operations off the Gulf of Mexico, where they get trapped in the fishing nets and sadly drown. Climate change is also considered to be a contributing factor in their decline.
